DESCRIPTION

Sloppy Joe is an American diner classic. This recipe features a lean beef mince in a rich and slightly spicy tomato sauce sandwiched between two lightly toasted buns. It's a hearty meal that's full of flavor and won't break the bank!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 tbsp butter
  • 250g lean beef mince
  • 1/4 green bell pepper
  • 1/4 large yellow onion
  • 1 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • 80ml water
  • 1/2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 4 whole wheat slider buns

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mince garlic and finely chop bell pepper and onion.
  2. Heat up butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add beef mince and cook until brown. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Add garlic, onion and bell pepper to the same skillet and cook for a few minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients (apart from the buns) to skillet and stir well until combined. Cook for 10-15 minutes until it thickens to desired consistency.
  5. Meanwhile, toast your buns.
  6. Remove meat sauce from heat, and serve immediately over toasted buns.

NOTES

  • Adjust amount of ketchup according to your preference.
  • Adjust cooking time according to your preference. If you want a thicker sauce, cook it for longer. If you want a thinner sauce, add more water.
  • Use whatever buns you like to suit your dietary requirements.
  • The meat sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for 3 days or freezer for 3 months.
