How to exercise with a bad neck?

I've always had neck problems for years. I've been trying to get in shape and have a better life style these past several months, I started working out for the past couple months, but I still have issues with my neck. I assumed doing workouts would help with my posture and eventually strengthen my neckmuscles, but ever now and then I still get neck pain.

How can I exercise with neck pain? I don't want to skip my workouts just for some neck pain. When I do crunch-type exercises, I hold the back of my head with my hands to support the weight of my head, and I use my abdominal muscles instead of my neck muscles to crunch. When I do a plank-type exercise, I don't know if I should drop my head down to let my muscles relax, or use my neck muscles to keep my head up. Other exercises that involved my neck needing to curve (ex. squats make my head curve upright while my body leans forward, or clam shells make me have to prop my head up to the side) and exercises that makes my neck muscles work (ex. Side planks and keeping my head up while my body is sideways) all cause my neck to overwork and therefore causes more pain.

Does anyone suffer from neck pain and found a way to do exercises without pain? A lot of chloe's exercises involves a lot of neck muscle useage, but I really want to lose body fat and not give up because of my bad neck...

Any advice is appreciated. I'm currently in pain while doing exercises right now lol, just trying to take it easy.
