when teens cannot control the "family diet"

I've been reading a lot of posts here today and i noticed that many teens struggle with controlling their diet due to their home's dietary customs. i'm from the balkans, where:
-your family may think you are crazy if you don't add at least 100ml of olive oil in the salad
- even god cannot criticize your mom's cooking
- meals like roasted chicken breast and rice are not considered under any circusmstances cooked foods/recipes.
These are all pretty funny (though real), but made me think that in some households, not just in the balkans of course, it is ,for various reasons, very difficult for kids to ask their parents to help them with the dietary choices they want to make and i feel that this is not a diet issue, but a communication and a relationship issue, in some cases even a cultural issue.
So, if there is someone here that has some expertise on parents-teens relationships and how the teens could approach the issue, i think it would be useful to put their knowledge here because i feel a lot of young people may need it (and please consider that this is a worldwide platform and that some peoples' parents might be quite strict or may consider psychology as nonesense).
I personally have some thoughts but i am definately not an expert. At 32 the only thing i can say with certainty is that roasted chicken breast and rice is not cooked food indeed.
